Greek eGrocery Q1 2022

As the pandemic has shifted shopping behavior once and for all, the number of online shoppers keeps rising around the world. The Greek Online Grocery managed to maintain last year’s unprecedented pace (+282% Y-o-Y growth in Q1 2021), with just a -4% Y-o-Y dip in Q1 2022 vs Q1 2021, according to aggregated data collected on Convert Group’s eRetail Audit platform and calculations from our Market Analysis team.

Key Insights:

  • The Greek Online Grocery Sector’s Sales Value during the first quarter of 2022 remained very close to the exceedingly high levels of the previous year, where the extended lockdown had elevated sales value growth rate. This also highlights the resilience of Online Grocery against the current inflationary pressures, which have contributed to a reduction to the overall consumer spending for groceries, especially in the last 2 months of the quarter.
  • While sales value declined slightly during this quarter, the total amount of volume sold was increased by almost 3%, indicating that shoppers tend to prefer larger packs in their orders, as a means to save money or stock products with longer shelf-life due to anxiety for rumored shortages or even higher inflation in the next months.
  • On average during Q1 of 2022, shoppers spend €78 per order. Only about a third of items sold under a promotion or discount, down by almost 16% compared to the same period in 2021. As a result, the average shopper basket contained 36 items, 1,5 items less compared to Q1 of 2021. Another notable change in consumer behavior is the increase of orders from mobile devices to 45% of all transactions, higher by 15 percentage points compared to last year.
